How to use your favorite music app in Google Maps
Using your phone to navigate and listen to music while driving are two common activities, but each app requires your full attention. It is distracting, dangerous, and in many states, illegal to play on your phone while driving.
To save you from having to swap apps just to switch music, Google has added a new feature that brings your music right into the Google Maps navigation mode.
The new feature, available for Android and iOS, lets you start playlists and pause music from your favorite app without having to quit browsing. The device you own limits the options you can choose from: Android users can link Google Maps to Google Play Music, Apple Music, or Spotify, while iOS users can only use Apple Music or Spotify. If you link Spotify, you will be able to browse the entire app and go back via a shortcut between the two programs. Here’s how to get started.
Synchronize the music application
The first time you use Google Maps after receiving the most recent version of the app, a black banner will appear in browse mode. Tap on it to set up a default music app that will play through Google Maps.
Manually sync the music app
If the banner does not appear, tap the hamburger menu () at the top of the screen. On Android (photo), go to Settings> Navigation settings and toggle the switch to Show media playback controls. On iOS, click on the hamburger menu and select the Settings icon () right> Navigation> Music playback controls.
How to use Spotify in Google Maps
After you toggle the Show media playback controls switch, a pop-up menu will appear on Android with a list of the music apps you have installed on your device; here we have an option for Google Play Music or Spotify. Choose which one you want to use while driving, and a button for the service will appear directly in navigation mode. You will then be able to control your music application via Google Maps.
How to use Apple Music in Google Maps
On iOS, a new page will appear and offer the option to link your Apple Music or Spotify accounts. Link one or both, and a button for the service (s) will appear in browse mode on Google Maps.
Control your music selection
Now when you turn on step-by-step directions on Google Maps, a little music widget will appear below the estimated arrival time, which will show what’s currently playing or say “Continue playing on [music service]. ”Depending on the music service you linked, it may also be possible to browse the music from Google Maps.
Find new music
This one is probably the best if you are stopped or if a passenger is handling the phone. On Android, browse Google Play Music at the touch of a button, with Google Maps always visible in the corner of the screen. Once you have made your musical selections, return to navigation by pressing the small window. This window will expand, giving you the choice to reopen Google Maps or close it completely.
On iOS, Google Maps will take you to the app you want to find new music, then back to Google Maps with one click (photo, right).
